Located on Fitzroy Farm, East Falkland, Whale Point offers Gentoo penguins and Elephant Seals just a short distance apart.
Please note that the despite the name there are no whales in the area which gets its name from the whale bones scattered around the coast line following a large stranding of Pilot whales back in 1965.
The white sand beach is home to a range of wildlife including Gentoo and occasional Magellanic penguin visitors amongst other species of birds including endemic Falkland Flightless Steamer Duck (known locally as the logger duck), and its close relative and less common Flying Steamer Duck (locally named as the canvasback). Other waterfowl to be seen on the ponds include Chiloë Wigeon, Silver Teal, Yellow-billed Teal and Silvery Grebe.
The resident Black-necked Swan, the Falklands largest freshwater breeding bird can occasionally be found here. These are shy birds and will fly or swim to the centre of a pond when approached.
The seasonal Elephant Seals are docile giants and can be seen sleeping on the beach and greens, or in the large wallows they make in the soft ground. Usually unwilling to be disturbed from their slumber, the Elephant seals take little notice of visitors when on land, but do provide a lively display when defending their territory or harems during the breeding season.
